What I Learned From Many Years Of Fitness

From the day I stepped foot in a gym to the day I became a personal trainer, there were many experiences. Plateaus, setbacks, progress, injuries, and overly-demanding clients — I have seen it all…

Academy Award Week

Acting Races

The Academy Awards are Sunday, so this week I’ll be previewing the big races, leading up to final predictions on Sunday, February 9 before the telecast. Today it’s the acting races.

Best Actor:
Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes”
Adam Driver, “Marriage Story,”
Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory”
Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”

About: This figures to be a good race, but one with a clear cut favorite. Phoenix has been winning a lot for his turn in “Joker,” and I think he’s probably close to a lock. However, there are several worthy performances here. I personally loved what Driver did in “Marriage Story,” but I think if there’s a dark horse during the actual awards it’s probably DiCaprio, who was great and is one of the leading contenders for Best Picture.

Best Actress:
Renee Zellweger, “Judy”
Scarlet Johansson, “Marriage Story”
Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women”
Charlize Theron, “Bombshell”
Cynthia Erivo, “Harriet”

About: This is another one with some great performances and one clear cut favorite. Zellweger has been the leader for her work in “Judy,” and will likely get the win here, too. But there are a couple strong contenders. Johansson had an incredible year, and is nominated in both lead and supporting actress. It would be incredible to see her win won, and she was wonderful in “Marriage Story.” I also think Theron is a contender for her fierce work in “Bombshell.”

Best Supporting Actor:
Al Pacino, “The Irishman”
Anthony Hopkins, “The Two Popes”
Brad Pitt, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”
Tom Hanks,” A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”
Joe Pesci, “The Irishman”

About: This is a star-studded field. Any of these guys could win an award, and each of them is a past winner. While I liked all the performances, the one who is the front-runner is Pitt. He was simply incredible in “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,” and he should win on Sunday night.

Best Supporting Actress:
Scarlett Johansson, “Jojo Rabbit”
Laura Dern, “Marriage Story”
Florence Pugh, “Little Women”
Margot Robbie, “Bombshell”
Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell”

About: This is an interesting field and perhaps the best race of the acting categories. You could make a strong case for all five nominees, and while Dern has been a frequent winner and is the front runner, I don’t feel like she’s as much of a lock as some of the others. I wouldn’t be surprised if she won, but personally I am drawn to Johansson, who I noted has had a great year. I feel like she was the heart of “Jojo Rabbit” in a lot of ways, and I would love to see her win for that work and for that film.
