L.A. Blues

Isaac stared deep into his Budweiser watching the tiny bubbles dance up towards the surface. Around him, it was a typical Saturday night and the Fun House was heaving. His friends Gavin and Louis were chatting to a couple of women at the bar and, as usual, he had been left to mind the coats.

It had been nearly 10 years since Isaac last found himself out drinking socially. After his long-drawn-out and messy divorce finally came to its conclusion four weeks ago, and the dirt was out in the open, his friends had decided it would be good for him to get back out meeting women.

Isaac had met Elaine in 1970. At that time, she was a sassy barmaid and he was an up and coming lawyer. They had met in this very bar and hit it off immediately. Despite their obvious career differences they shared a love of dancing to the L.A. blues, and it was this pastime that formed the rock in their relationship. Over time their music tastes evolved but the dancing was ever present.

The end of their marriage began with the end of their pastime. A loose screw on a ladder saw Isaac slip and break his leg in three places. He was bed-bound for months with nothing but the television for company and the couple struggled to live solely on Elaine’s bar manager wages.

Isaac had made things worse when, finally going mad from T.V. eye, he crawled out of bed, leg in plaster, and attempted a few chores outside. Feeling particularly useless, he just lay down on the street, and crawled back into the driveway. Elaine arrived home, in her bar manager’s Subaru Impreza. Isaac watched as she cuddled up to him before parting with a brief kiss.

After almost stepping on Isaac on the way back to the house, Elaine admitted everything. She had been sleeping with Mike for months now and she was glad it was in the open. After she packed her bags and left later that day, Isaac sat at the window listening to Mike’s crackling exhaust as it faded into the distance.

Isaac had contemplated ending it on more than one occasion since Elaine left. He was grateful for the help of his friends who had helped him through it all. He looked up at Gavin and Louis at the bar, and smiled to himself. As he stood up he caught the eye of the barmaid and signalled for another drink.

He wandered over to the karaoke machine and inserted a quarter. He selected a tune and a saxophone started the groove; tonight, he thought, was going to be a jazz night.
