Gravity and the curve of room time

Isaac Newton described the effects of gravity in 1687, but he did not propose a mechanism to explain how it works. It would be some time before the man was born who would change the way we understood gravity.

In 1915, Albert Einstein came up with the idea that massive objects bend space-time. In the theory of general relativity, Einstein does not describe gravity as a force, but as a consequence of the curvature of space-time caused by the uneven distribution of mass/energy. This curvature of space-time dictates the motion of matter in the universe, and accelerating massive bodies produce ripples in the space-time continuum called gravitational waves.

The theory of general relativity led to a number of predictions that supported experimental verification. One prediction of this theory is that gravitational waves are present everywhere in the universe, but Einstein thought they were too small to be detected. It was only in 2016 that gravitational waves were discovered experimentally, and this gives us a new method of exploring the universe.

In its current form, general relativity is incompatible with quantum mechanics — and this may be a sign that a major change in the way we understand the universe is soon to come.

The effects of gravity
Think for a moment about the effect of gravity on your body. If you raise a hand you feel the effect of gravity; gravity is always everywhere — it is stable, permanent and unchanging. Or is it not so?

For hundreds of years we could anticipate the effects of gravity but had no idea how it worked until Einstein sketched a strange and unintuitive picture of gravity. In Einstein’s view, far from being a static, constant “force,” gravity is a fundamental part of the universe that curves space-time as massive objects move through it.
