There Are Others Like Me

In 2013, my wife and I went on a cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. As you can imagine, a cruise can be challenging for someone with an eating disorder. It is what you make of it, though.

The first cruise we went on was in the late 9. It was with a major cruise line; I won’t mention the name. This company had assigned seating with other guests, as many do. This put me on edge, sitting with strangers and explaining why I wasn’t eating.

The first meal had us sitting at a table for twelve with two other families. The waitress came over and started pitching their wine package that would provide us with wine at every meal for the length of the cruise. Not being a wine drinker, I politely declined. She came back 5 minutes later and tried her pitch again. I thought this was crazy and politely declined again.

For the third time in 15 minutes, she tried to push this wine package again. That was enough for me. I stood up and told my wife it was time to go. I can’t imagine what this waitress would have done when I told her I did not want any food. We ended up going to the buffet restaurant that most cruise ships have.

We never did attempt a formal sit-down meal again after this. The staff kept on hassling us and apologizing though I never told them why we were avoiding the formal dinners.
