I Touched a Tree…And the Tree Touched Me Back.

The sun was warm that day. I found a tree that offered some shade as I stood waiting for nature’s magnificent display of a sunset on Oahu’s North Shore. My attention turned to the tree. It seemed to be an old tree standing in a stately manner watching over things as people come and go oblivious to its presence except when they need some shade from the sun. I stood there alone, conscious of the tree, standing in its quiet magnificence. I felt a kinship with the tree. As my hand rested in gratitude on its old, thick bark, my eyes lifted toward the sunset. I saw other trees bathed in the light of sunset preparing for night’s slumber. I smiled a smile of quiet joy to be so present in the perfection of this moment. My mind returned to the tree in gratitude. I thanked the tree for the gift of this moment, turned, and walked away knowing its energy was now a part of me. Me and the tree. The next morning, I woke earlier than usual. It was still dark. I lay in bed for a while thinking of the tree. As I did I placed my hand on my chest, on the bark of my own tree. I smiled as my beating heart seemed to beat beyond my physical body to a larger rhythm. I lied still savoring the moment until sleep came again.
