Can creative thinking be optimised?

I am answering this question from my baseline of the thinking process. Experiences I have had about discovering my mind spaces and the thinking process.

So the difference between creative thinking and the thinking process is that one is a basic process of thinking in you and the other is a permutation or a pattern in mind using the basic thinking process to explore other connections and possibilities and using the imagination to spin information and observations into creating something totally new or different in your mind which you can use.

So there are 2 main thinking processes in you:

These are your 2 main tools:

verbal thinking and

visual/spatial thinking — pictorial thinking

verbal thinking is self-talk thinking — you are silently having a conversation with yourself to spin an idea into shape, Just like you would speak aloud with another in a discussion. This is the type of thinking that is behind the creative process. You use verbal thinking to spin and mix and match, dissect and cut and paste, information you have about what your attention is focused on. You are doing this by first having a silent discussion with yourself and then the unconscious mind processing the information and creating a new pattern in your brain/mind and trying to get that Aha moment in you or perhaps just an understanding of the subject matter.

Also, remember that your creative thinking possibilities are greater when you have a diverse repository in your brain/mind — what you read and the experiences you have had, the subjects you have learnt, the friends you keep — when you have access to more diverse different experiences and knowledge the more “weird” is the way you start to put things together.

This is an interesting read on how good creative practices can be set up for you:

Creativity as a process in itself will work best if it is allowed to wander to explore. The problem with us is that we are wired to only follow what is conditioned in us and also to ALWAYS wander to what we already know in mind, into our past in us and in memory. But science has helped us here somewhat to loosen up in mind — what they say is that if you focus the mind in the Alpha phase in mind it has a tendency to dissolve some of the barriers in the mind where we get stuck in our conditioned mind and when this happens the mind is allowed to wander to more possibilities that are further away from the conditioned possibilities and hence help you to make new patterns in mind and find different solutions to a problem.

This is an interesting simple test to see how Alpha waves emerge in the brain to signify the state of the body/mind. Notice that for Alpha waves to appear in the brain the person needs to relax.

EEG: How to record brain waves & the alpha-wave test

These were some experiments done by research teams:

The human brain needs to suppress obvious ideas in order to reach the most creative ones, according to scientists at Queen Mary University of London and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Creativity requires us to break away from more common and easily reached ideas but we know little about how this happens in our brain.

A new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, shows that brainwaves play a crucial role in inhibiting habitual thinking modes to pave the way to access more remote ideas.

For me, I find that the best way to relax and to get to the Alpha waves naturally is to centre the mind in the Alpha brain wave frequency. Just make an effort to stop all verbal thinking by keeping the flutter of your vocal cords silent and the silent mind instantly ensues. Remain centred in the silent mind and here when the Alpha wave is active, you are your most creative at all times. The barriers of the conditioned mind are broken down and the mind is free to explore.

When the mind is at about 8 Hz (8Hz to 12 Hz) the Alpha wave in mind is the dominant wave:

You can see in the video above that they focused on an area in the brain where you can find the Alpha wave and they explained above that the brain works with all its operating frequencies when they use a cap to monitor the whole brain.

If you think that you are forcing the brain to be in this silent mind Alpha mode — this is really a default mode for the brain. The body-mind has a natural tendency to drift to this point in mind so when centred in the Alpha Mind you are really allowing the mind to rest in its natural rhythm in mind. The brain wants to rest here in the Alpha state of “being” in what is called the Default Mode Network (DMN):

What better way to spend the whole day, than resting in the Default Mode Network and action in mind only and when needed. This DMN is what is called being in the present “now” all the time and after some stressful activity always come back here for a rest and also for the unconscious mind to solve the stressful problems for you while you are relaxed and come up with an intuitive feeling or even a creative Aha mind solving solution to the stressful problem.
