Kill your darlings

Why I’m committing a crime of passion and bringing the best copy principles into my life.

Ever since I was a little girl, music has been my fascination.

And thanks to my big sister’s influence, I listened to pop records and artists that made my childhood and teen years sufferable.

As the years passed, I became interested in all kinds of music and working in this field was, for many years, my absolute dream job.

So when, in 2016, I finally started doing it for real, it was a dream come true.

I have been a radio host for six and a half years after I reset my life and started from 0.

It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

When I look back, this was simply my life aligning.

I had one goal: enter the university’s amateur radio station, and become a radio host and show producer.

And so it happened.

While doing radio, I worked several jobs to support myself because radio gave me nothing besides soul food.

Although I was tired and suffered in some jobs for taking radio so seriously, I never considered giving it away.

I was the happiest for doing it, and it brought me many joys like new experiences, friends and love.

I got to know many artists I adore and had many delicious discussions with people who love music as much as I do.

All this time, I also did the following:

2- the challenge of when to stop.

Now I’m in a completely different phase where I feel I’ve experienced enough with hobbies and such, and it’s time to dedicate my time and energy to other goals.

So I’m quitting the radio for a while, probably forever.

I need all the time to focus my whole energy on other goals like my writing.

Copywriting is the same thing. Sometimes, you have “kill your darlings”.

The idea behind “Kill your darlings” is that we may become attached to certain words or phrases that don’t serve the overall purpose of the piece and should be removed, no matter how much we love them.

As copywriters, we want to create compelling and persuasive content that drives action from our audience.

But we can’t let our attachment to what we write get in the way of achieving that goal.

When we “kill our darlings” in copywriting, we eliminate anything that doesn’t serve the purpose of the piece.

Now, this is a challenging thing to do. It demands a great capacity not to let our ego get in the way of our work. I see many pieces that need this.

Now, this doesn’t mean we have to eliminate all the creative elements from our writing — on the contrary, we need them.

We have to understand what will work for you and what will work for your audience, as they may not coincide.

Besides, compelling copy often requires a certain level of artistry.

Prioritize the purpose of the piece over our attachment to a certain language.

Ultimately, copywriting aims to inspire action from our audience — whether making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or simply clicking a link.

By following the “kill your darlings” principle, we can create more compelling copy to achieve that goal.

I will never stop loving radio. But now it’s time to let it go.

Music and radio will always make me smile; in a way, it’s my first love. ❤

It’s time to cut with the distractions, as much as it may hurt.
