Adjusting to Online Learning

When my university was closed in mid-March I was worried about how my learning would be affected. At this time all areas of life were surrounded by uncertainty including how the university would be operating and assessing students. At first I tried to act as if nothing had changed and made sure to keep up with lectures by listening to them at the times I would usually be attending them. However this only lasted a few days… with everything that was happening in the world it felt very unnatural to act as if nothing had changed. I had a few days of recharging before I decided to get back to productivity.

I decided that I was going to create a schedule for my daily routine. In the week after university closed I had next to no routine and that was a major issue when it came to getting my work done. I decided on a time that I would wake up, eat lunch, exercise and finish working for the day, and this would be the same every day. I think this is the best thing I could have done to improve my mindset and the quality of my work. Online learning means that my work can be done at any time so I decided to move away from my lecture timetable that varied day to day. Despite the unpredictability in the world, my predictable routine gave me a sense of security. Before transferring to online learning I did not know that I would be able to persevere like I have and I think that this experience has made me a much more resilient person. The lessons I have learned from online learning will be useful in the future because it is important to be able to self-manage, especially if after leaving university I find myself in a job without stringent work hours, or if at some point I am self-employed.

Since transferring to learning online I have had to start using new programs that I would not usually use. For example beforehand I had never even heard of Zoom however I use it almost daily now. I was introduced to it in my lab classes but since then I have started to use it to talk to friends and family as well as work interviews and meetings. I expect that for a while online video calling will be a normal part of my life.

Since lockdown I have found that it is important to make time to do things that I enjoy and that are good for me. Before I felt like I was always in a rush but lockdown has given me the opportunity to take things slower and enjoy life with a slower pace for a while. I am now exercising every day, which I did not have time for before, and even when I had time to exercise I would often be so tired from all the things in my day that I did not have the energy to exercise. Now going for my daily run is part of my routine and I look forward to it. Exercising has been good for both my physical and mental health during lockdown. It feels good to see myself getting faster and fitter and this new hobby has become something to focus on and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I take comfort in the fact that things are not going so slow forever so I may as well appreciate the slow pace while I can.
