Do Tai Chi with your Grandma

Tai Chi has been gaining some recognition in the senior population as a method to prevent falls. Falls is the leading cause of injury or even death in individuals that are 65 years old and up. And as a trainer and health professional this ancient art may be of great interest to you and your client that may be at risk!

Contrary to our traditional mantra “no pain, no gain” — Tai chi provides a gentle, effective exercise to train the fundamental exercise components. These include — Strength, Flexibility/Mobility, Balance and to a lesser extent aerobic fitness.

Strength comes from the way in which the nature of the “forms” are — slow and controlled; often circular motions with our arms and controlling our lower body as we shift our weight from one leg to another.

Flexibility and Mobility is increase by moving in different directions we may not be accustomed to. It has shown to increase the range of motion in both upper and lower body.

Balance is one of the most important health benefits that someone may start a Tai Chi routine. It’s been shown that with age, we also lose our proprioception (our ability to sense where our body is in space).

Aerobic Fitness is one of the benefits of starting Tai Chi depending on how many forms are involved and how long the duration is. This however will not be the main exercise component that will be trained — so it’s probably a good idea to have an additional exercise that you enjoy that is more aerobic.

In addition with the physical benefits, it should be noted that Tai Chi has been shown to reduce the fear of falling and increased psychological benefits.

To wrap up, if you’re looking for alternative ways to switch up the routine for your clients or just spend some quality time with your mom and pop. Give the ancient martial art a try while feeling cool and healthy.
