Live Your Most Authentic Life

and How to Live it Every Day

When is the last time you felt like the most authentic version of yourself?

There are many ways of asking this same question — when did you last feel like you were living your truth? How long has it been since you felt like you were doing things that just…came naturally?

I like to ask people that I meet this question. It makes them uncomfortable, and it makes them think. This is my favorite Icebreaker because it is such a simple yet profound question. How many of us actually stop and check-in with ourselves to understand if we truly feel like we are living in a way that feels natural to us?

The frenetic rhythm of daily life can make having this level of depth very difficult. Especially in taxing times such as these, when you’re barely just hanging on by a thread, the last thing on your mind is seeking suppressed truths within you.

Finding space to allow your inner voice to come through can be very challenging. Modern-day meditation preaches creating the time and space to sit still in a way that works for your regular life. Gone are the days of flying across the world to an ashram in India and taking 3 months off work to sit silently in a room of strangers. This is just not feasible anymore.

So what’s a “wannabe-enlightened” person to do?

This quest for authenticity is all the more important now because the Covid-19 Pandemic has completely redefined the parameters of “personal space.” Lockdown has turned our homes, our oasis for relaxation, into a multi-purpose space where one can eat, sleep, work, and everything in between. Who could have predicted that to make a “living,” you’d have to settle for no life? It’s time to reclaim our “We Work” space and turn it into a “me-work” space!

These are my musings on how to do just that:

Often we find ourselves knee-deep in activities that we didn’t sign up for. Why? There can be many reasons. Fear of disappointing a loved one, trying to keep up with a perceived competitor, or simply peer pressure. Interrogate your assumptions and make sure that you put in the work to understand your own motivations. Whatever the reason may be, don’t add another item to your to-do list without considering it in a vacuum.

Moments of pure joy are few and far between. Authenticity can feel ephemeral, but replicating moments in which you experienced an in-the-moment sense of awe can help make the journey a bit more tangible.

It’s so easy to lie to yourself — it’s even harder, to tell the truth. This particular realization can come in moments that you least expect. You can find yourself down a path that you believed was serving you and helping you live your best life, only to realize halfway through that you were doing it for the wrong reasons. It’s possible that when you began down this road, you genuinely believed it was the right way to go. Disassociating feelings of guilt from changing your mind is the only healthy way to create space for yourself to grow and chase authenticity.

My tried and true answer to the evergreen Interview question, “What do you feel is your greatest strength”? Emotional intelligence. I cannot stress enough how underrated of a skill this is—a soft skill but a skill nonetheless. The merits of EQ vs. IQ remains a robust debate, but EQ will always reign supreme in the area of relationship-building. Yes, “relationship building” can absolutely be with yourself. Understanding who you are and what you stand for makes it easier to walk away from things that don’t serve you.

I’ve said this before — embracing the law of attraction can be immensely helpful in staying centered on your path to authenticity. If you are reading this and absolutely know that you are not living your most authentic life, that’s a good start. Acknowledgment that you can work harder to figure out what fuels your passions is a great first step to tapping into what you want to achieve.
