Breaking In

A large stone building lay in front of him, surrounded by thorny fences and the only entrance flanked by guards. He could never make it past them with all his might. However, he was not without wits.

Smiling mischievously, the boy glanced around him quickly before disappearing into a thicket and threw a stone across to the other side. On noticing, two guards grunted loudly and walked over to the opposite side.

“What’d you do that for?” Asked another voice. Hiding in the same bush was a scrawny kid of fourteen with dusty hair and beige peasant clothes evidently covered in shoe polish stains.

The older of the boys said, “No reason. Just wanted to mess with them a little.”

“Will, you know that wasn’t part of the plan,” began the scrawny kid.

“Relax Billy, I know what I’m doing. Now that they’re distracted, it makes it easier to dig through,” said Will as he opened a sack and took out a strange-looking object that began drilling through the ground. Contrary to its appearance, the drill was oddly quiet yet incredibly fast. Within minutes, William and Billy now had an underground way into the stone building that just so happened to be the Zovaria Empire’s local prison.

In a swift movement, William slipped through the tunnel while an anxious Billy stayed in the bush to guard the tunnel.

Once inside the tunnel, William brought out a torch but realized there was no need since the hallways were surprisingly well lit. Despite the ominous appearance of the prison, the inside was not what one would expect. Upon finding no guards at all, William happily made his way through, not caring about his echoing footsteps that were being followed by quieter nimble ones.

“Who are you?” Said a voice as William froze in his tracks. In an attempt to play it cool, he slowly turned around.

A teenage girl dressed in dark purple pants and a zip-up jacket with a bow slung on her shoulder was standing not too far from him as she carefully watched with her piercing hazel eyes. She had brown hair that was tied into a loose bun and didn’t look the slightest bit amused.

Since her first instinct was to ask who he was and not how he got in, William figured he could play this to his advantage and replied with, “Oh…
