My brief foodie journey in Stockholm Part 3

If you managed to finish my previous 2 posts, congratulations, you’re nearly there (and thank you for following through)!!

In this last post, I am going to talk about the only place that disappoint me, a pleasant surprise and coffee.

Let’s start with the bad thing and end on a high note.

I’d say Speceriet is the only disappointment. Not that it is not good; however, we probably have a really high expectation and the main is not distinguishable (like one of those places). It is neither cheap nor expensive for lunch (a set with coffee + dessert + main for less than SEK200).

One thing that is to the credit though (apart from the cool design), their food is quite clean with not much added sugar. The juice and the dessert tasted quite sour and “fruity”. That may or may not make it tastier, but it is always good to eat clean.

The water tap is very cool looking.

It was quite late and most restaurants were closed for lunch. When we walked on the street, the friendly waiter just called out, and we just decided to go (out of no choice). The meal turned out was not bad at all! It was an Italian restaurant (brother got a risotto), but I decided to try to stick with local food as far as possible, and get the herrings.

Since it was fried herrings, I was expecting something dry and crispy. This turned out to be quite different. First, the fish was bigger than I though and more meaty. It is not dry and actually reminded me of bacalhau (Portugal posts in the making…:)). Both are processed but have a texture more similar to fresh fish, also salted but NOT that savoury.

A further plus to this is, it is actually not that oily. I could eat this regularly.

I heard that most of the restaurants in the old town are touristy and overpriced. I think this place is quite reasonable in terms of price. The mains were less then SEK200 with a small all-you-can-eat salad bar. If you are in the old town and looking for something different, I would recommend this.

7. Airport meal — Himmel & Hav Brasseri & Bar

Since we had quite a crazy flight schedule, we wanted to have a light meal before our first flight. The meal turned out to be not light at all (as portion was big), but it did make us end our trip with a good memory.

Given that it was the airport plus it was Stockholm, we thought that the portion would be small. But we were wrong.

So wrong.

We ordered a seafood soup, fries, mayo (which actually means mayo + toast) and a cheese platter.

The food here end up even cheaper than what we had in another bar (which I totally forgot about) the night before. The cheese platter is about a few tens SEK cheaper but triple the size.

Quality wise, I think the cheese was very good (I love strong cheese), the toast was good (especially with the soup!), and the seafood soup tasted decent and has a lot of ingredients! I would not say it is a gourmet dinner (well if I only had the cheese…), but a hearty one.

As much as I am happy with this place, I would try to explore more of the skycity next time when I fly here. Mind you though, the airport is quite big, so watch your time if you’re not flying in T4 or T1.

Sweden is a huge coffee nation. Swedes drink coffee all the time, the drink that during the day (fika!) and even after dinner.

Swedish coffee is known to be strong (stronger than espresso kind of strong), and most people seems to like it black.

Coffee as an essential drink for the country is not cheap. Indeed, it is one of the few things I truly found expensive there (among water / any alcoholic drinks, and chewing gum).

In my other trip, I usually have a list of cool cafe, but this time, I just wanted to play it by ear. I end up did not try any of the indie coffee shops, but did went to 2 popular chains.

I actually was kind of excited to see this place. I found out about that in HK airport a few months ago, and I love the coffee there (I heard there is a shop in TST, but I haven’t seen it. So, the airport pier one is the only one that I know.

This chain’s name actually reminds me of batman.

Different from Joe & the Juice, this chain has a less “classy”/”hipster” vibe. The shop is much more crowded and more Starbusks like. Coffee wise, I’d say it is slightly better than Joe & the Juice, but it is still not good.

In hindsight, I should probably go for the black coffee instead. During my trip there, I did not have any recollection of good milk, and may be that explains a bit.

It was an unexpected positive foodie trip. Somehow, I expect Swedish cuisine to have no taste (when I see any brown bread, I think of German food. When I think of German food, nothing good come up).

Food here are usually made with good ingredients, have distinct taste and big in portion. I know what I would go for next time when I am in Sweden, I hope that you have gained some ideas/inspiration from here too!
